WORKSHOPS | SPEAKERS | YOUTH SCHEDULE

"Youth Praying for Perseverance" - Dr. Marcia Lucas
This workshop will focus on creating an atmosphere for young people (ages 12-18) in which to explore and/or further develop their prayer life. The vehicles used for this exciting journey into the heart of God, will be investigating various Biblical prayers and the practical use of these prayers. The use of skits and multi-media clips will be utilized to further illustrate the issues effecting youth in the modern day church. This workshop will require active participation and a hunger for seeking God through prayer. Come excited and come seeking something new from God.

My Mission? Impossible? - Redd Sevilla
Am I going to be the next American Idol? Or the next Top Model? Am I going to be the next Billy Graham or James Dobson? Who are those guys anyway? What exactly is my mission or purpose as a teenager in this world? Should I be even thinking about this? In this workshop, we will explore developing your personal mission.

Losing Your Religion: Coming out of your Spiritual Closet - Peter Ong
You have the latest Mercy Me CD, put on your best Christian T-shirt (probably the one you bought last year...More than Words) right before each retreat, you serve at your local church as worship leader, you are even dating the pastor's kid. Then you head out for another day at school...oops, oh yeah, you say a quick prayer before you walk into the "secular" world. You know you are suppose to share your faith but it would be so much better if I just be nice to everyone to share God's love..but nobody knows you are a Christian. This workshop will help you get "come out" and find Christ's perspecive of a what a follower means to proclaim with truth and love and being able to find audience with those around you and how God has called you to a mission field...

As Seen on TV! - Laurence Tom
We’ve encountered seasons of American idols, survivors, and apprentices, Kanye West’s Hip-Hop annunciation, Jay-Z’a exit or Jay-Z’s return. The mission of St. Bono and the church of U2. Mel Gibson’s Passion and his apocalypto vision. Addictions to Lost, 24, mysterious Bible codes or the Davinci code. What’s on your iPod? Who’s on your myspace? What do you think about that guy who jumps on couches on Oprah or girls in Juicy Couture sporting small dogs in their clutches?

You ought to be familiar with at least one of these things mentioned unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of years. Or maybe you’ve just got über conservative chinese parents which may also probably be equivocal to living under a rock. Everywhere we turn, pop culture is there. Like cotton, it’s a part of the fabric of our lives. It will touch us without us realizing. Most of us inhale copius amounts of movies and books while spitting out tongue twisting lyrics to the latest beat slamming download but rarely do we do so with a discerning mind and soul. Some church traditions condemn most of this stuff. Some have even tried isolating themselves from the world all together.

Watch, listen or stay away? Can we really avoid it even if we tried? Discover where faith and culture caress and collide.

Social Justice & Racial Reconciliation - Jeff White
Is seeking a just society an important part of the Christian calling? Is it central to living out the gospel or something that is secondary to the evangelistic task? How do social action and racial reconciliation relate to one another? At this seminar we will consider these and related question that are crucial to living faithfully as followers of Christ in a fallen world.

Worship: Truth, Spirit, and Freedom - Ben Koo
Has worship become another boring part of church? Or has it even become another source to get a spiritual or emotional high. Why is it that we come to church and sing? Why do some churches have such different types of worship? Is one way better than another? What does it mean to worship God in spirit and in truth? Worship is supposed to be about God but can easily turn into something about us. This workshop seeks to expand your view of worship, so that we, as worshippers can more fully appreciate and experience all that God has intended for us through this incredible gift.

Counseling Peers 101 - Erin Manahan
Ever feel like your day, week, month...just isn't going well?? Ever have feelings of dread, guilt, anxiety, mischief, hopelessness, fear, sadness, rage, doubt? The list goes on and on. And not only ourselves, but our friends CRY OUT on the phone, AIM, Xanga... for help! We are complex people, but one thing is certain - God desires a simple faith, a faith that is sure. Well, how can we have that when He made us like this?? Find out how we can understand our own hearts so that we can be God's instruments in ministering to those around us.

Help! I'm a Small Group Leader - Noelle Dong
"OK. You're a small group leader now." <-- Has this ever happened to you? Now what? Are you thinking about serving as a small group leader in your youth group or other places, but you aren't sure what you're supposed to do? What do you say when a group expectantly looks to you to lead them? In this workshop and training time, we will learn and discuss about both the heart of a leader and the skills of a leader. We'll talk about what it means to be a servant leader, the purpose of small groups to build Christian community, growing your group through Bible study, and how to practically apply being a leader in a small group situation. You'll get practical training within the context of what the Bible says about leadership. Workshop attendees will also have a time to share and learn from each other, especially about "sticky situations" they've encountered in their in their small group experiences. This workshop is for those who have or are currently serving as small group leaders as well as those who are thinking about being a small group leader in the near future.
